Teeth Whitening Overview

January 30, 2017 Teeth Whitening

If you asked anyone, “Would you love to have a Hollywood smile?” we at Sana Dental seriously doubt that anyone would say “No thanks.” The fact is, though, if you want to keep your teeth bright and shiny without intervention from your Edmonton dentist, what that means is that first of all you will need to have been born with perfectly white teeth, and then you will need to forego many of the things you love – coffee, tea, cola drinks, red wine, chocolate – and what kind of life is that? Fortunately, you can enjoy your guilty pleasures and still enjoy a beautiful smile with teeth whitening treatment from your Edmonton dentist.

How Does Tooth Whitening Work?

To understand how teeth get whitened, first you need to know how they get stained in the first place. Basically, there are two types of tooth discoloration – extrinsic and intrinsic. The extrinsic stains are the ones on the surface. The intrinsic stains are the ones below your tooth enamel. The causes are essentially the same.

Now, when you brush using a whitening toothpaste, it goes some way to remove the stains that we described above that you incurred during any given day. However, when you enjoy those stain-causing foods and drinks regularly, some of the staining ends up below the enamel, and these will not be removed by brushing. This is where teeth whitening treatments from your dentist can help.

The Procedure

When you come to us at Sana Dental for teeth whitening, first, Dr. Alex Pavlenko will examine your teeth. If he finds that you have a lot of crowns or bonding, he may advise against teeth whitening – this is because it is impossible to change the color of dental restorations, and if you have a lot of restorations, whitening could actually make your teeth look worse.

If you are a good candidate, though, you have several options, including in-office treatment, at-home treatment, or a combination of the two. Either method uses a powerful bleaching compound in trays that fit your mouth. This compound is peroxide-basted, and blasts stains out of your teeth. Once the desired level of whitening is reached, you will only need occasional touch-up treatments to maintain your brilliant smile.
