Dental Crowns Aftercare

July 10, 2017 Dental Crowns

There are many reasons that dental crowns are used. They are a very common form of restorative dentistry because they form a rugged and defensive shield around what remains of a damaged or decayed tooth. This makes it functional and capable of being used without any pain or discomfort. Though they are extremely strong and long lasting, you can ensure the best outcomes using proper dental crowns aftercare. At Sana Dental in Edmonton, AB we recommend our patients use the following steps.

Immediately After Treatment

As your preferred dentist in Edmonton, we are going to have some dental crowns aftercare that you should use right after you have received your crown. The first step is to avoid eating or drinking until the numbness fades. Then, be careful about hot and cold foods over the next day or so as your tooth beneath the crown is still sensitive and needs to adjust.

Our dental crowns specialist will be able to advise you if you may have this sensitivity and will explain to you any special issues, if they apply. Do give the tooth a bit of time to adjust, but if your bite feels wrong, contact us immediately.

Regular Dental Crowns Aftercare

Once healing and adjustment occurs, dental crowns aftercare is a lot like regular dental care. You must brush and floss your crowns as you would natural teeth. And though they are incredibly strong and rugged, you don’t want to challenge them too much. Avoid eating incredibly hard or sticky foods, using the crowns as a tool (like tearing something open with your teeth), and chewing your nails or other hard surfaces.

Be sure you have regular dental exams and cleanings, too. Though crowns are used for everything from implants and damaged teeth, they can suffer damage over time, or the teeth they protect can worsen or experience serious issues like abscess or infection. It is only through exams and cleanings that our team can nip such issues in the bud.
