Most people who try a tooth whitening procedure love the results. Having a whiter, younger-looking smile usually makes a person feel more confident and attractive. However, not everyone is a candidate for teeth whitening. There are a few unique cases in which teeth whitening procedures would not be recommended to our patients in Edmonton.
Good Candidates for Teeth Whitening
Cosmetic dentistry procedures like teeth whitening are very popular, so it makes sense that most people do not realize there are things that would prevent them from getting this procedure. If you:
- Have chronic dental sensitivity
- Have gum disease or unhealthy gums
- Have oral cancer
- Have enamel that is extremely worn or damaged
- Have teeth that tend to appear translucent
- Have cavities
…then you may not be a good candidate for teeth whitening. Luckily, some of these issues can be treated. Gum disease, oral cancer, and cavities can be treated by your dentist in Edmonton. Then your teeth whitening specialist will often be able to whiten your smile.
One More Consideration
There is another situation that may make a person choose not to have teeth whitening. If you have several dental restorations, such as veneers or crowns, be aware that these will not whiten with the rest of your teeth. They do not respond to the whitening chemical in the same way. If these were dyed to match your current shade, they will be too dark once your natural teeth are whitened.
