What is a Root Canal?

A root canal procedure is performed to save a natural tooth from extraction when the natural pocket that contains your tooth’s nerve, as well as the inner portion of your tooth surrounding it (called the pulp) becomes diseased, infected, or exposed. If your tooth’s root becomes irritated, inflamed, or infected, from either decay or because your tooth has cracked, decay-causing bacteria can gradually penetrate the tooth and form an infection, which will cause you to experience root canal pain. If left untreated, severe pain will persist. Dental abscess and possible tooth loss could follow. A root canal is a critical treatment option to save a tooth from extraction in North Edmonton.

What is the Root Canal Procedure?

A root canal treatment is made up of a series of steps that, depending on your situation, may be completed in one dental visit or several.

  1. The first step is to open up the inner portion of your tooth. A local anesthetic will be applied to ensure that you remain pain-free and comfortable throughout the procedure.
  2. Step two is called a pulpectomy. In this step, the diseased pulp is removed, and then the inner chamber is thoroughly cleaned and shaped to prepare it for a filling.
  3. The use of the Light Walker Laser pips technique.
  4. Next, a rubbery material called gutta-percha is inserted into the cleaned-out chamber, and sealed into place. If the tooth requires additional support, a carbon fiber post may be placed in the canal to strengthen it. If your root canal will take more than one visit, a temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth between visits.
  5. The final step may consist of the placement of a crown over the tooth to restore its shape and appearance.

Does A Root Canal Hurt?

It is a widely held and common misconception that root canal therapy is quite painful. Understandably, many people are scared at the prospect of a root canal. This fear is misplaced, however. With modern anesthetics and experienced hands, a root canal should cause no more discomfort than a dental filling.

Consequences of Avoiding a Root Canal

There is good reason to not run away from a root canal. Avoiding a root canal can cost you more problems down the road, including:

  • Unresolved bacteria and decay may cause an infection or an abscess
  • Swelling can spread to your face, neck, or head
  • The bone around the damaged tooth can deteriorate to the point that the tooth cannot be saved and must be extracted
  • As the infection grows, it needs a place to go and can begin to drain outward into your gums or the skin of your cheek
  • Pain caused by an infected or damaged tooth will not resolve on its own. The pain will only remain, and get worse.
